Technology Collaborators

After more than a year of experimentations, seeking independent validation and confirmation of its’ experimental model studies, in early 2006, KATRU engaged Honda Formula 1 racing team’s Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modelling arm Advantage CFD in UK to undertake extensive model evaluations. The modelling and analyses by the fluid dynamic specialist at ACFD (now an independent CFD consultancy called TOTALSIM) confirmed the scale model testing. Subsequently, further extensive simulation work was carriedout by ACFD to arrive at an optimized design with maximum efficiency for the IMPLUX Turbine design.

The UK office of GL Garrad Hassan, the world's largest renewable energy consultancy, with specialist skills in conventional and innovative wind turbine design analyses was engaged in mid 2007 to evaluate the IMPLUX Turbine development work done by KATRU and the results produced by HONDA F1 ACFD’s extensive simulations. As conventional performance limit theory was inadequate to predict operational performance of the IMPLUX Turbine, GLGH were also subsequently asked to investigate possible theoretical bases for the design. This lead to the subsequent scientific publication of a new limit theory for all types of wind turbines in early 2008.

KATRU’s engineers worked with the team at Aerotrope Ltd. (UK ) which provides specialist design, analysis and inspection services to the wind turbine industry, to investigate and develop the first full scale prototype unit for fabrication. With their experience in practical development of unusual designs and expertise and strength in Finite element Analyses and aerolaminate technology Aerotrope were well placed for the task and a final model design was completed in 2008. Working with a Garrad Hassan aerofoil profile design they also developed the structure of the rotor’s carbon blades

In late 2009, DYNAGLASS Reinforced Plastic Pte Ltd. a long standing, high performance moulded ‘fibreglass’ product company with strong technological base in the area of engineered reinforced plastics, in Singapore, was awarded the contract to build the first full scale prototype shroud including the molds.

Designcraft Ltd. a highly skilled boutique blade building company in UK were engaged to build the high strength carbon blades designed for the prototype.

TEMPCO Ltd. a specialist prototype developer/integrator collaborated with KATRU to experiment and test assemble the complete proof-of-concept unit, including the rotor and blades, in 2010.
